On July 9, 2024, Peter Ryan and his trekking group continued their incredible journey across the Kokoda Track, waking up at 7:00 PM and embarking on an adventure to view the breathtaking Lake Myola. After taking in the stunning scenery, they safely arrived at Templeton's Crossing, where spirits were high and everyone was in good health.

Templeton's Crossing: A Historical Landmark

Templeton's Crossing holds significant historical importance. It was named after Captain Sam Templeton, the first Australian officer captured by advancing Japanese forces during World War II. This location was designated by Bert Kienzle, the Architect of Kokoda, as a tribute to Templeton's bravery and sacrifice.

The story of Captain Sam Templeton has been brought to life in a new book titled Kokoda Legend , authored by David Howell from Kokoda Historical. This work delves into Templeton's experiences and highlights the challenges faced by Australian soldiers during the Kokoda Campaign.

The Kokoda Track is renowned not only for its physical challenges but also for its rich historical context. It stretches approximately 96 kilometers through the lush, rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea, connecting the southern and northern coasts. Trekkers on this path experience a unique blend of natural beauty and profound historical significance, walking in the footsteps of those who fought valiantly during one of Australia’s most significant military campaigns.

For those interested in exploring more about this pivotal moment in history, Kokoda Legend is available at all good bookstores and online. You can also find it by visiting Kokoda Historical. This book is not just a story; it's an invitation to understand the sacrifices made by those who walked the Kokoda Track before us.

As Peter Ryan and his group continue their trek, the stories of heroes like Captain Sam Templeton resonate deeply. Their journey serves as a reminder of courage and resilience, both in nature and in history. The trek remains a transformative experience for all involved, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices of the past while creating lasting memories in the present.
